I adore this piece, and I'm so happy you mentioned it in your comments on my draft. Kahlil Gibran's "On Children" is pinned above my desk and I shared it with my students' parents at back-to-school night. It breaks my heart as it instructs. And it pleases me to no end to see it in the middle of this gorgeous essay. The rusty basketball hoop, the minivan, "'Where did that come from?' I quiz my husband, searching for our imprint on their journey": it's all here. Thank you for naming it so beautifully.

After reading your work, all I can say is honoured to have you leave this comment Alissa. This identity crisis and invisibility is a real struggle.

I have women in my life who have traversed (honestly and heroically) obstacles I have yet to come to, and I look to them for guidance. Reading your essays, I've named you as one of them. Thank you.

Wow. Truly humbled. And thankful that you embrace the wisdom I pass along, so generously handed down to me by those a few steps ahead in my life journey.
