I adore this piece, and I'm so happy you mentioned it in your comments on my draft. Kahlil Gibran's "On Children" is pinned above my desk and I shared it with my students' parents at back-to-school night. It breaks my heart as it instructs. And it pleases me to no end to see it in the middle of this gorgeous essay. The rusty basketball hoop, the minivan, "'Where did that come from?' I quiz my husband, searching for our imprint on their journey": it's all here. Thank you for naming it so beautifully.
