So much to chew over here, what a wonderful, well thought out look at the next 100+ years. I hadn’t even considered how we’re straddling two different eras but this is making me think differently about how to skill build and plan for the future. So much of this resonated, when I think of my own college experience, it’s crazy to realize how little I knew about the way technology would continue to shape the world. Great read Karena!
Thanks for letting me know this was an essay worth sharing.
Your generation was the first to be surprised by this new world. You put it perfectly "it's crazy to realize how little I knew about the way technology would shape the world."
Thank you, Leo. I hope you found it interesting and actionable too.
It was longer than previous essays, but I think a journey over 10 years of thinking needed to have an arc. I was struck by Trevor's comment. He was one of the first to read the original essay, and it was interesting to see others interface with thoughts that have lived in my head for so long. And watching Hamilton this weekend pulled it together too.
My daughter has been a huge fan since forever. So I've hear the sound track (and live vocals) for years. But nothing prepares you for the actual production. I recommend it.
Meantime, the score on Spotify gives you the full story.
How do we evaluate what is timeless wisdom that will help us anchor our actions and what’s timely ideas we have to let go? Loved reading this deep dive!!!!
I love the term ‘heirloom skills’ and that they will be the constant, passing on values that matter which will inform how we live and care for each other and the planet.
Twenty years seem so far in the future when they are toddlers. Then suddenly you turn around and they are living their own lives. Working with the lego-block heirloom skills you gave them so many years prior. Thank you Aimen.
Lots of work in this Karena and some great takeaways. Embracing dead ends as discovery resonated with me - I've been down a few... Presenting it as an opportunity gifted to us is an inspiring way to conclude - a genuine call to action!
Great work! I am still thinking about this form the first draft I read and I love the finished essay. To think we’re only at the tip of the iceberg is humbling, scary, and exciting.
Thanks for all your insight and help, Charlie. I like the triad you picked to describe this: humbling, scary and exciting. All the ingredients for opportunity.
Very interesting read Karena! This topic fascinates me really, and just like you "my accidental foray into the Future of Work started with wanting to protect and prepare my children for the future." It's all for our children! Thank you for sharing your findings and ideas with us! Great issue!

So glad you published! I know you worked very hard on this 😊

So jealous— I’ve heard such great things about Hamilton

I love this question of how we can build bridges to easy transitions!

Passing on values that matter - an even better way of putting it! Thanks for reading and reflecting back, Margaret.
Karena, excellent read!!
So much to think about. I never realised how I’m living this era of tradition to new normal.
Right before my eyes, paper CVs were replaced with digital CVs and then to online portfolio.
And now, no body (at least in my circle) ask about CVs anymore. People don’t look for jobs, they are approached by employers.
I agree with that focus is shifting towards EQ and the skills like grit, & resilience.
I don’t how world will look like when my three-year-old will turn 20. So much happening so fast.
Thanks for sharing these insights with us.

Thank you Adrian. I really do think we are positioned at a very special moment in time.

Thank you for participating in these conversations. Particularly as you are in the middle of EduTech AND are raising young children.
