To remove the avocado seed, I press the knife into the seed just enough for it to get a grip. Then, while firmly holding the avocado half, I rotate the knife slowly (right or left, whichever direction works for you) until the seed pops out.
As for noticing: I love how the Carolina Wren has a fierce, grumpy visage (grace à the white eyebrow) but has a beautiful song.
I hold the avocado in the palm of my hand, and use something with a little more edge than a butter knife to impale the seed ... and that is when I start wondering if today is the day I end up in the ER!
I agree, Karena. I always hold my breath because you have to "thwack" that knife down before you twist. I suppose it's between "Ahhhh!!!!" and "Ahhhh..." (another little difference to notice that has big difference on the result. ;-))
"Who designed the avocado? Or am I just cutting it wrong? Why does the seed let go one delicious half with ease, but hug the other so tight that shifting it risks a visit to Emergency?"
Noticing is the first step, indeed. I love that you show your readers a unique perspective that make us think deeply about even the smallest topics. Thank you for stretching this muscle and bringing us closer to awe!
When God designed the avocado, he made it so putting a slice of onion around the seed in the center of the other half it'll keep it fresh for a bit until you need to use it.
However, do not, under any circumstance, look up the origin of the name of the avocado. Even the ancient Nahuatl speakers had a sense of humor.
Always good to see a dispatch from you. I hope you, Andrew, and the family are all well!
When I lie awake at night, I've been noticing and enjoying the pattern reflected on my ceiling from the lights strewn on my backyard fence. Festive yet calming.
as a diehard cyclist, what I’m noticing is how many more motorist are running red lights in December than any other time of year. Too bad everybody’s in such a hurry, but I’m slowing down so I don’t get my trip to the emergency room handed to me bya vehicle.

Professional chefs seem to do an axe throw-esque motion before turning the half with the seed in it. Watching it gives me anxiety
ditto!!! "axe throw-esque" and that is why you do what you do with words and visuals, Claire!!!
Did you ever see those bowls from the 70s shaped like an avocado for prawn cocktail? Bet there’s some similarly dusty tool somewhere for this

We are doing well. I thank you often for your class and its lessons. And here is a link to some photos Andrew took on a recent visit to Japan:
