Sometimes an idea just slaps you in the face: The Gratitude Filter
E208: "Pay attention" the Universe said. So I did.
đ§ This edition: short & sweet
Give Thanks - It is a filter that improves your outlook on life, and rewires your brain to search for the positive. Choosing a positive outlook can reduce stress, boost your immunity, and reduce inflammation. And smiling is a gift often returned - it is infectious!
It was not the first time the benefits of gratitude have shown up on my radar in the past week. Like a hungry toddler, grabbing at their motherâs skirt, trying to get her attention, it was just the most recent âpingâ from the Universe.
A LinkedIn post showcasing
talk about her Five Minute Gratitude Circle team practice1A video link discussing the joy of connections and the physiological benefits of gratitude
An invitation from the yoga instructor âPractice gratitude. It can rewire your brain.â
âOne is an outlier. Two is a cluster. Three is a trend.â2 (Or a note from the Universe).
âList 50 things you are grateful for before our next yoga session.â
I throw on my gratitude filter glasses. And suddenly, the world looks a little more rosy:
That dopamine fix from seeing another green check box on the yoga tracker.
The insane technology and intelligence to build something so simple, yet effective on this human.
Movement is making me more flexible. I can finally reach back to unhook my bra (frozen left shoulder since November 2024) - yeah, you really donât know how much you miss the little things âtil they matter!
My three children. Their plans for this weekend. Their friend groups. Deeply grateful for the wonderful human beings they have each drawn into their orbit.
Having friends willing to play Scrabble and be guinea pigs for my chutney sandwiches and âbitingsâ.
My sonâs Instagram reel âHave a baby (with me)â that shimmers with so much summer.3
- is now a boy-mom! And is traveling with her children. Iâm so excited for the stories they will be sharing over the coming weeks and years. And is a Dad! Yay!!
The excitement of seeing so many familiar friends, and new faces who will soon be old friends in Act Two. And that buzzzz that comes from standing on the edge of something new and wonderful.
The absolute joy and broad smiles in this photo!
Abundance. Creative white space! Lovely metaphor by
and who reached back in time to describe how the original cartographers depicted the âwhole worldâ based on âwhat they could seeâ starting in 150AD. We can only see what we can see to our visible horizon. But that (as we now know) is not everything. The first maps of the Americas by the Portuguese in the 1600s were just the East coast. Imagine what could be possible!!! The first writing exercise âWhat might be beyond that horizon for you?â has me buzzing with possibilities. The exercise above inspired Lori to put her thought exercise words into a lyric, which she then put to music. It is hauntingly beautiful and Iâm playing it on loop. I recommend reading her lyrics carefully. âI thought I was sailing away, But Iâm coming about⌠And all I can see is home.â4
Robin Wall Kimmererâs place in my journey of fostering community5 and how it resurfaced in office hours yesterday, bringing me back to Braiding Sweetgrass.
- âs recent post showcasing the work of the amazingly generous and talented who took head shots of each of the Crows while we were in Ireland.
A twenty-minute booked call with Sci-Fi author
that ran over the free zoom limit into 2 hours of chatter and discovery.Waking up to see Tokyo-based cartoonist
is recommending my Substack. âTokyo-basedâ are some of my magnet words, so, yeah, gooosebumps!Discovering a little posse of perplexed people around marketing prof Dominique Falla on Instagram, who are similarly trying to reverse-engineer âThe Felix Effectâ and explore what makes the K-pop marketing algorithm so strong.
The sound of intense rain on the tiles, their percussion speaking: âReplenishing the aquifer, replenishing the aquifer.â So I give thanks for water.
And I thank those who care about water. Like Fei-Ling Tseng, Adam Tank, Cees Kamp (Turritap https://www.turritap.com/)
One of my closest friends has just become a MD at BlackRock. My heart is overflowing with joy and pride! Yay her!!!
I get to visit the city of my young selfâNYCâand catch up with old and new friends.
- is back publishing, and sharing her day-to-day âI realized I was putting more value on the unexpected and missed the wonder of the ordinary right in front of me.â
- has written his second psalm. I loved the first one and asked him to write more. He didnât have to accept the challenge and walk through that door. But my world is now more beautiful and blessed because of the way he sees storms and uses his words "For encounters with God in common things and common places."
It is Teacherâs Day - and my 90+-year-old high school headmistress is still alive and sufficiently tech-forward that she and I WhatsApp daily. I sent her a message to thank her for her role in my journey to now. Only in 2023 did my mother share this story with me - There were moments when we were really struggling, so Mum visited my headmistress at school. She allowed Mum to stagger paying the fees for the five children she had enrolled. Small mercies. Massive payback. My headmistress would often be seen after school visiting homes in the village, working with families, raising all ships through education. I stand on the shoulders of generous giants.
