This reminds me of the famous Jobs saying, "You can't connect the dots looking forward, you can only connect them looking backward." That's how life works! And it jives with "answering when serendipity knocks," subline of your newsletter too. Love the emotional core of your writing!

Helen, your words mean the world to me. "emotional core" is something the STEM in me is trying hard to work towards that comes easier to others. So I really appreciate this. Thank you. Seriously.

I loved the passage you shared. It was just what I needed today! Thank you, Karena and Happy new year to you :)

I guess the muse called it right, Sairam. Welcome to Tribe Tilt. I really enjoyed your newsletter today.

Karena, this might just be my favourite Tilt edition yet! I LOVE the cover photo of you with your arms raised to the sky in (what I assume is) Banff. It reinforces your message beautifully and feels really inspiring!

I'm excited about the year ahead but I also have a lot of unknowns so this message is a timely comfort. Thank you!

And though I don't have kids yet, I would be interested to hear about travelling around the world with young children as that's something I definitely plan to do.

OMG. Thanks, Allie.

That is Lake Louise in Banff.

I agree about this message. It is reminds us to pace ourselves and manage the goals with the successes. When you realize it was probably written over 100 years ago, it becomes even more amazing. What is old is new again. Or maybe it is an eternal situation.

And I will track your request for more travel stories.

I thought that was Lake Louise! I have a picture that was taken from nearly the same spot as my background on my desktop.

It is such an inspiring spot, isn't it? I have a similar photo above my desk, which inspired that trip. The blue. Nothing quite like it.

Photo credit though goes to my husband!

That sentiment from your mom is beautiful, Karena.

Thanks Simone. Moms rock! They were the right words for that moment. And for 30 years too. And now they are rippling through other lives too.

Happy new year Karen. I loved the inspiring quote from your mom. Wish you have a wonderful year ahead. Love to read stories about your traveling with kids.

Thanks Banafsheh. First Happy New Year to you and your family. I will start adding in more travel stories into my newsletters.

This quote is a prayer written over 100 years ago. I am thrilled that so many people are finding value in it.

Karena this is terrific! Im trying to build a non-traditional startup and there is significant ambiguity and challenges - this kind of quote makes the daily challenges easier to get through.

I am glad it helps a little, Shorjoe. The journey can seem daunting, yet we need to take one step. This messaging allows me to do what I can, where I can, when I can. And trust that the little I put out into the world makes a difference to one person, somewhere.

What is your startup about? I'd love to catch up and learn more.

Hi Karena the startup is about re-inventing the array of Indian mithai. Sharing a piece that gives a peek into our vision:

I had read that and was hoping it was the startup you are focused on. Jaggery is such an underrated ingredient. And so powerful with the complexity of nutrients it offers with its dash of sweetness. Some of my best childhood memories start with freh grated coconut and shaved jaggery!

Absolutely fortified jaggery and other forms are making a comeback! Its the good side of sugar cane so its time it returns to the stage as one worlds best sweeteners!

Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful!

I LOVEEE your cover photo. It gives a fresh, confident and full of hope vibes.

“you are exactly where you are meant to be”

I strongly believe in this. Looking backwards, all the events that happened in past 7-8 years set the base for where I am today. No regrets, No ifs and buts.

I would love to hear about travelling with kids. We already travel with our 3 years old but I want to do it more frequently.

How did travelling has benefitted you and your family?

Looking forward to more from you in 2023. 🌟

❤️

Thank you, Aimen.

I'll be sure to include more travel tales. The travel has had a huge impact on our family. I'm writing a book about the ripple effects all these years later as the kids mature.

Thanks for the compliment on the photo. That scenery is amazing!

And that prayer is so timeless. I am.glad it resonated.

Karena! First off, the answer is Yes to all your questions. I enjoy reading you so much that I feel you shouldn’t even ask, just go ahead and do it. “My muse asked me to scratch my planned post and share this instead” -- what a beautiful way to put it. And your mom’s words just left me breathless. So intimate, thoughtful, appropriate, and energizing. Just what my soul needed. Thank you! 🙏🏻

Thank you, Silvio. I am humbled. I get so much value out of your newsletters too.

As for the words - it is actually a prayer written by St Theresa of Lisieux. In the 1800s. She died when she was 24. What timeless and powerful wisdom.

Expand full comment

Yes, the prayer is by St Theresa of Lisieux, but your mom gave it to you. And, to me, it's as if these were her words for you. You know, there's an essay by Derek Sivers titled "Don’t quote. Make it yours and say it yourself" that says that when we encounter an idea that we like, we make it ours, and from that point on we shouldn't even reference the original source. It's kind of radical thinking, but I tend to agree with that. And so that prayer that your mom gave you, even though was not hers, it's as if it was, because she thought it would be good for you. It might not make sense to some, but I like to think in these terms. :)

Expand full comment

I can live with this! I shared with my mother how impactful these words have been today on so many. It is as if there is a ripple going out through the world and the simple thoughts of a 24-yr-old cloistered nun find a new energy.
