Rest Element 26: What do you do to reset?
A beach that breathes in. and out. in. and out.
A poll.
A recap of editions 176-181
I’ve had wonderful catchup calls in friendlier IST time slots with
Jolly Balva, and other friends. I leave Goa on March 19. Ping me if you'd like to catch up.Rest element 26: What is your reset zone?
Welcome to our 26th discussion on the topic of rest.
What experience gives you a reset?
What experience gives you a reset? Everyone has one. But it may take a little time and journalling to discover the one that works best for you. My advice from the 3rd quarter of my life? Take the time to figure it out.
One sister’s reset is listening to the various bird calls in our corner of the world. She appreciates the beach, but it does not settle her soul as much as the symphony of sound.
My perfect reset is a sunrise on the beach. (Sounds bougie, doesn’t it?) No matter how tired I am, I cannot sleep through my sunrise alarm when I’m at a beach.
I love the shadowy inky black before the hint of light hits.
I listen to the generational quiet with which the fishermen haul in their nets and hoist them on their shoulders, each action practised day in, day out, for years, for decades. 1
Official sunrise is not so dramatic. The sky is painted in pale pastels in the moments before the sun crests the horizon.
But after? The sun rises above the horizon. And it is as if the Gods woke up and tipped a cauldron of gold over the Earth. “Welcome!” they seem to cry, “welcome to this new day!”
What is it about sunrise on the beach that gives me a reset?
It is nature reminding me that resets are possible. A gift of a fresh 24 hours to spend how I wish. Forget yesterday’s failures. And yesterday’s successes too. Just as a baby does not remember that it was fed yesterday, our hungry nature calls on us to make good use of this time.
And it is the primordial sound of the waves. My beating heart rate relaxes and resets in response to the call of each wave as it hits the shore:
Breathe in. HOLD. Breathe out.
Create a speed bump in your life and slow down.
I’m trying to figure out what brings you, my reader, more joy over the coming weeks:
Recap: Digest of issues 176 - 181 … how it all fits together
Thank you for all the messages of love and respect that poured in for the one-year anniversary for my mother. She continues to guide and teach me from another dimension. She shows me that I will survive, supported by so many people around me. And her beautiful smile and legacy live on.
Seasons of change - a year without my mother
It is hard to believe that we lost our mother a year ago.
When I saw this comment from
who parents Michelle with it made me tear up and I reached for the phone to call my mum:Thank you for sharing all the important lessons you learned on the journey with us. You are an incredible mother that I always look up to, your words about being a mother are my comforts during my time learning to be a new mom (still learning!), and that always made me wonder what an incredible mother you must have, too!
We love you and your mother ♥️
The learnings from nature filled the remainder of this series:

Did you enjoy the photos from the Galapagos? [No is a full sentence and an acceptable answer. In fact that is what one of my siblings had the courage to say to me!] I was inspired by how nature had figured out workarounds and felt compelled to share my ‘aha’s.
As I keep searching for answers for our human 21st-century world it felt like I’d been dropped into a mystical world laden with solutions. Species adapt. The Galapagos penguin can dart by you at 40 mph because it is not carrying the fat and padding of his southern cousins, and is guaranteed to find food today and tomorrow. Species co-exist. They share resources and serve as protection for each other. Nature experiments - a pregnant male seahorse proves that all rules exist to be broken.
Community. Resilience. Adaptability.
These were just some of the many lessons I learned from these amazing creatures in nature. And, from the comments, it appears many of you noticed them too.
Did you pick up that Awe has remained a highlight in this newsletter sequence ever since my podcast interview with Scooter Oyama (E169)?
My child left a comment on one of my posts!
