It was, Rick! It happened after our Galapagos vacation. The kids kept circling back to check on me (laden with life jacket, hand on ring buoy and still hyperventilating). I vowed that by the end of the year I would learn to snorkel to the extent that they did not have to worry about my safety, and could explore at their own pace, at peace.
And if I was lucky, I would be relaxed enough to enjoy the pleasures of the deeper sea too.
On the Galapagos trip, the one thing I'd never seen before: a pregnant seahorse. Thanks to patient guide who pulled me along with a life buoy. And the grace of the absolutely huge turtles. Many years ago, off the Great Barrier Reef in shallower waters I distinctly recall the vibrant colours and variety of the coral. On this trip, there were some interestingly shaped tropical fish. I have to relax enough to remember everything ... panic plays havoc with my memory!
Karena, these memories are magical. It's worth the effort to note them and share them. Just the snippet you shared here reminds me of the majesty and nearness of other honorable worlds and softens the myopia that often accompanies this one.
Learning how to learn is probably one of the most crucial 21st century skills ... at any time in mankind's history, but especially now as we deal with intense technological change. It felt good to practice that skill on a physical trait! I wish I had the courage (and balance) to paddle board. Maybe next time, eh? Like you say ... curiosity and patience (lots of patience!)
