A nursery to the stars
E44: Carina nebula as a metaphor for my work, and launching the Carbon Almanac
“blah, blah, blah … race for the conservative party leadership heats up … blah, blah, blah, … record temperatures in the South East …. blah, blah, blah … and later in the newscast the first photos from the James Webb telescope including some from the Karena nebula” …
I snapped to attention. (Obviously, someone has spelled Carina incorrectly, but I will take that up with them offline)
Welcome to episode 44 from London, where the heat is sapping my energy and it is getting almost too hot to think.

Carina nebula - nursery to the stars
An overheated world was hungry for good news this week - and you could hear the collective “oohs” and “aaahs” from across the globe. Through the dreams and imagination of some young scientist a few decades ago the heavens now open to us in technicolour.
The Carina nebula is a star formation zone, and this beautiful photo of the cosmic cliffs shows young hatchling stars testing their flying wings. Want to learn more about star-creation? Start here
I feel it is a visual metaphor for my work at Tilt the Future. I love noticing and nurturing young talent. Being the life juice that supports creative minds. And publicly stating my hope and belief that they can and will make a difference to help them burn bright.
I dream big and in technicolour.
And apparently, somewhere in the universe, I nurture stars! Who knew?
What about you?
Keep calm and carry on … talking about the climate
300 people wrote a book about climate. It is an old-fashioned almanac - the kind you pored over as a kid, filled with facts, short stories, longer ones, comic strips, and conversation starters. Just lots and lots of facts and figures. And it was published this week.
The Carbon Almanac … It’s not too late
This book brings a positive mobilizing energy into the climate conversation.
Watch this lush video:
Personally, I seek to talk about climate through the lens of hope. I believe that the best idea will come from anyone, anywhere, at any time. To inspire young people that this is still a battle that can be won, we have to ensure we talk about it with optimism.
And that comes through clearly in this book. Urgency. Instead of desperation, a chance for us all to collectively put our heads, minds and behaviours together and move towards a world worth leaving for our children and our children's children. It’s not too late.
Any respectful discussion on climate is a good discussion. We do not have to agree on everything. But we do have to start taking steps, however small. When you get the book and love it, share it forward. Gift copies to your friends. Leave one in the office kitchen. This book is too good to stay sitting on the shelf.
This group of volunteers has become a movement. Many of us are part of the Seth Godin / Akimbo mind-trust that nurtured podcasts, new businesses and books:
There is the book launch which is rolling out on different dates across the globe starting July 13. Buy the book here (links to global distributors). Buy 5 copies and share them in a book club, with your co-workers and friends. All profits will go to climate charities. Carry on … talking climate
